How to Start a Blog and Make Money in 2026: From $0 to the first $1000
Everyone says, "Start a blog," but no one shows the exact steps to get traffic and money in 2026.
I built Kapya Market from 0 to $1000/month using only free tools + 1 web host. No coding. No ads. Here's the 6-step system that works in the USA, UK, SA, AU, India—everywhere.
Fair warning: This takes 30–90 days. If you want "overnight money," close this tab. If you want a real asset, keep reading.
Step 1: Pick a Niche That Pays — 10 Minutes
Don't blog about "your life." Google can't rank it, and advertisers won't pay for it.
2026 niches that make money: web hosting, finance, software, tech gear, health, and pets. Avoid news, poetry, and politics.
I picked "web hosting + blogging tools" because 1 sale = $65–$150. Compare that to Amazon's $3 webcam commission.

Step 2: Launch Your Blog — 15 Minutes
You need 2 things: a domain + hosting. Free blogs like Blogger won't rank or get AdSense approval.
| Your Traffic | Best Host 2026 | Why |
|---|---|---|
| South Africa | HostAfrica | Fastest for SA readers, pay by EFT, from R49/mo |
| USA, UK, AU, Global | GreenGeeks | 300% green energy, $2.95/mo, 6 global data centers |
Don't know which? See my comparison → GreenGeeks vs Hostinger 2026 or Best Web Hosting South Africa
Setup: Buy hosting → 1-click install WordPress → Pick free Astra theme. Done. If you're on Blogger, migrate now. AdSense approval is much harder on Blogspot subdomains.
Step 3: Write 5 Posts That Rank — The 80/20 Rule
Don't write 50 posts. Write 5 that match what people Google.
My first 5 posts that got me traffic:
- "Best X for Y" → Best Web Hosting South Africa
- "X vs Y" → GreenGeeks vs Hostinger
- "How to X" → How to Choose a Niche
- "Review" → GreenGeeks Review
- "Tutorial" → How to Start Affiliate Marketing
Template for every post: Problem → Agitate → Solution → Proof → CTA. See how I wrote affiliate reviews that convert.
Step 4: Get Indexed in Google — Day 1
If Google can't find you, you get 0 traffic. Do this after each post:
- Google Search Console: Add your site → Verify → Submit your sitemap.
- URL Inspection: Paste your new post URL → Click "Request Indexing." This cuts the 14-day wait to 24–72 hours.
- Internal linking: Every new post must link to 2 old posts. Every old post must link back to the new one. Google follows links to discover content.
My posts got traffic in 5 days because I did this. Skip it and you'll wait weeks for any views.
Step 5: Get Your First 1000 Visitors — No Ads
2026 SEO reality: Google ranks helpful, real experiences. Not AI spam.
Do this weekly:
- Answer questions: Go to Quora or Reddit. Search "how to start a blog." Answer genuinely with 3 sentences + 1 helpful link to your post. Max 1 link per answer.
- YouTube Shorts: Film a 30-second phone video—"3 mistakes new bloggers make." Pin your blog link in the description. I use the Logitech C920 webcam for desk recordings.
- Update old posts: Google loves fresh content. Add 1 paragraph per week to your best post.
Traffic timeline: Month 1 = 0–100. Month 2 = 100–1000. Month 3 = 1000–5000. My traffic jumped on day 5 because I linked all posts together.
Step 6: Make Money — AdSense + Affiliates
Income Stream 1: Google AdSense — $3–$30 per 1000 views
Requirements in 2026:
- Own domain (not Blogspot subdomain)
- 10–15 helpful posts
- Site at least 1–3 months old
- Privacy Policy + Contact page
Apply: adsense.google.com → Add site → Paste code in WordPress → Wait 3–14 days. Put ads AFTER you have 1,000 monthly visitors, or you'll earn almost nothing.
Income Stream 2: Affiliate Marketing — $65–$150 per sale
This pays 20x more than AdSense. I made $0 from ads and $390 from 6 hosting sales in month 2.
Start with these 3 programs:
- GreenGeeks — $65/sale, 30-day cookie, best for global audiences
- HostAfrica—ZAR commissions, best for South African audiences
- Amazon Associates — 1–10%, great for gear reviews. Full guide → Amazon Affiliate Marketing 2026
Rule: Only promote what you use. Readers and Google can both tell if you're fake.
Your 30-Day Action Plan
| Week | Task |
|---|---|
| Week 1 | Buy hosting + install WordPress. Write Post #1: "Best X for Y" |
| Week 2 | Write Posts #2–3. Set up Google Search Console + Request Indexing. Add internal links. |
| Week 3 | Write Posts #4–5. Apply to GreenGeeks + Amazon Associates. Answer 5 Quora questions. |
